The Charlie Brown Christmas Tree

The year my father died, my mother wasn't much interested in celebrating Christmas. Her gift shopping was half-hearted or incomplete, the number of cookies and candies she prepared dropped exponentially, and she simply didn't have the energy to prepare Christmas for guests, no matter how small a group. When I came home from the Twin Cities two days before Christmas to be with her, I also discovered that she had left the house totally undecorated, including, worst of all, no fresh Christmas…See More

Tea Party Values

Another week, another religion survey. Last week, the Pew Forum's survey on American religious knowledge garnered widespread media coverage and discussion, primarily for its unequivocal demonstration that atheists and agnostics are generally more knowledgeable about religion than adherents. This week, to less fanfare, but perhaps more significance, the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) released its biennial American Values…See More

Religious Ignorance: The Pew Survey

When survey results of U.S. religious beliefs, knowledge, and practices are released, they inevitably cause buzz in religious circles, particularly if they point to trends that either point to decreasing influence of religion or to more syncretist or evangelical styles. But the results are usually soon forgotten, and we go back to our usual habits, quickly losing whatever sense of urgency or determination to act that the survey initially provoked in us. In other words, the information is…See More

Burning Faith

One would not think that the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks would draw special attention in the media and culture at large. In regard to momentous events like this, we usually reserve our special focus for dates that seem like more of a landmark--one year, five years, ten years, twenty-five years, and so forth. But 9/11 has this year asserted itself into our consciousness unexpectedly, primarily, though not entirely, when the Reverend Terry Jones, pastor of a tiny Florida church,…See More

Sabbath Healing at Ground Zero

It must be terrible to be the survivor of a 9/11 victim. Imagine that nearly every time a story on terrorism or of another, related issue appears in the media that those now all-too-familiar pictures or video depicting the death of your loved one is used for illustration. How many times have these people had to relive in that way the shocking demise of their spouses, children, siblings, or friends? Apart from totally shutting out all media coverage from one's life, the horror of those last…See More

David Lott commented on the blog post 'Pop Music and the Bible'
Kyle T. Fever raises some provocative issues in his blog post, and I thank him for his thoughtful post. As an admitted CD addict, I have occasionally used my blog at NewProclamation.com as a place to point preachers and pastors to popular music that…

Thanks for the post, David! Are you also a fan of Johnny Cash? Maybe even The Highwaymen?
